At the HOVENSA oil refinery on St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, modification, demolition and removal of concrete compressors for Tejas Maintenance is an excellent example of Bluegrass' knowledge, experience and technology at work.
Job:
- Modification, demolition and removal of concrete compressors.
- One compressors measured 31 feet long by 9 feet tall by 18 feet thick. Three others measured 21 feet long by 9 feet tall by 13 feet thick.
Problem:
- Compressors were located flush against the fire walls, in confined spaces throughout the refinery.
- Close proximity to operating compressors requiring zero dust and debris.
Solution:
- Technicians core drilled along the length of the compressors for wire sawing access and then made vertical cuts to separate compressors from the walls. The compressors were segmented using concrete saw cutting techniques and craned out for addition segmentation and disposal.
- Waste slurry was vacuumed out for disposal.
Results:
- Elimination of airborne dust and debris allowed other compressors to operate throughout the project.
- Bluegrass cut a total of 4,500 square feet of concrete and project was completed on time and within budget with no recordable accidents.
