Flexible Decommissioning Solutions

A nuclear decommissioning project completed for the Sacramento Municipal Utility District encapsulates our ability to meet project requirements on time and on budget. Bluegrass saved the District nearly $1 million by segmenting a large nuclear reactor for shipping and burial. This project marked the first time diamond wire sawing technology was used in a nuclear decommissioning project. Our wire saws were used to penetrate an eight inch thick steel nuclear reactor head and a three foot thick steel head flange. Successful desegmentation of the Sacramento nuclear reactor was the result of precise cuts and Bluegrass bringing their vast well of experience to bear.

During this nuclear decommissioning project, Bluegrass was able to adjust set ups, wire tension and wire speed when high temperatures and internal stress built up, causing the head flange to move.
